Perhaps one of the most direct responses we’ve ever had to a magazine article was a call we received as a follow-up to being featured in a recent Design Week piece, which focussed on neurodiversity in the creative agency environment.

 After reading the article, Doctors Helen Gowling and Becky Hull contacted us to discuss an exciting project they were working on, and as the service focusses on helping neurodivergent individuals, and being neurodivergent themselves, they felt it was important to work with someone who understood their experiences.

The Divergent Space provides a unique, inclusive service tailored specifically to the needs of the neurodivergent individual. Whether for a diagnostic assessment, or 1-to-1 therapy sessions, the team works to develop a shared understanding of a person’s strengths, differences, and challenges.

Speaking about the experience of working with SUN, Dr Gowling commented: “As a new business we needed a professional image that we could present to the world whilst also having something which captured who we are and what we offer.

“We came across SUN in the article published in Design Week, which spoke about neurodiversity, and we reached out to find out if they could help. From the first meeting, we felt they shared a lot of our values and understood what we were looking for. They were also enthusiastic about neurodiversity, and it was clear that they lived by the ethos they expressed in the article.

“Working with SUN has felt collaborative in a way that we have not experienced with other services. The pace of work has been adapted to our needs, there has never been any pressure to ‘know’ an answer and Jamie and his team have aways felt to be willing to understand our process and experience and to check their understanding is accurate.

“Stepping into the design world, something we know very little about, could have been daunting but at each stage there has been clear communication, choices, and requests for feedback which have felt genuinely wanted.

“Our ideas have very much fed into the process and, crucially, we have always felt that we had the permission to say ‘no’ to suggestions, something that isn’t always the experience for neurodivergent people. At no point did we experience feeling any frustration at not being understood, which is something that quite often happens.”

The flexible identity for the clinic is based on inclusivity and sensitivity, with a discreet name change which removes the word ‘divergent’ to enable visitors to the property to have ownership of the space they are entering, and to make it a space that is welcoming and can address their needs and challenges. This is coupled with a calm and sensory visual language and a soft typography choice, with neutral and calming colour ways that reflect the muted tones chosen for the building itself.

As part of the project, we created concept designs for internal and external signage, as the team are due to open a brand-new clinic which has been renovated with the needs of the people they work with in mind and is within walking distance of Skipton High Street.
